The Health Indicators in NORC (naturally occurring retirement community) Programs initiative, started in 2007, has enabled community-based programs with limited resources to become more systematic in addressing the management of clients with diabetes, heart disease, or an increased risk for falls. Phil is the Director of the Center on Aging and Community, Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, USA. He is a cultural anthropologist, involved with aging services, research and education for nearly 35 years. For the last ten years Phil has been a leader in the “elder-friendly communities” movement, which shifts the focus on aging away from the individual “needs” of elders to the community context in which the aging experience is embedded.

Comprehensive Assessment includes a variety of assessment instruments being used by various agencies in 12 states. Some of these wide-ranging tools are comprehensive (such as the Rhode Island Universal Comprehensive Assessment), others are more targeted (such as the caregiver assessment tool from the Family Caregiver Alliance). And Intake and Screening provides additional tools and state intake procedures.

Print This PageA Toolkit for Serving Diverse Communities from the the U.S. Administration on Aging provides the Aging Network and its partners with a replicable and easy-to-use method for providing respectful, inclusive, and sensitive services for any diverse community. The Toolkit consists of a four-step process and a questionnaire that assists professionals, volunteers and grassroots advocates with every stage of program planning, implementation and service delivery for older adult communities, their families and caregivers. The core principles of the toolkit include respect, inclusion and sensitivity as the hallmarks of quality service. This Toolkit is an invitation to make a cultural shift in service provision, to learn, to grow and fully appreciate the diverse community of older adults that agencies and their partners serve.

Aging Well in Communities: A Toolkit for Planning, Engagement & Action is a user-friendly guide to help local governments, human service providers, community groups and other partners plan now to address both the challenges and opportunities that are coming. The toolkit is based on the Center's research and experience over the past several years assisting communities in planning for healthy aging. The Center for Civic Partnerships' mission is to provide leadership and management support to build healthier communities and more effective nonprofit organizations. Its parent organization is the Public Health Institute (PHI), one of the largest and most comprehensive public health organizations in the United States.

Compendium of Community Aging Initiatives
Print This PageThe Compendium of Community Aging Initiatives was published in March by the Center for Social Services Research with support from the MetLife Foundation. The Compendium provides information on 121 initiatives and organizations across the country that are helping communities become more aging friendly. The Center for Social Services Research is housed in the School of Social Welfare at the University of California at Berkeley.
